The company was founded in 1951.   N.G. Heimos Greenhouses now has facilities in Sunset Hills, Sappington Mo;  Millstadt and New Athens IL.  Sunset Hills primarily grows indoor blooming crops and Micky’s Minis miniature plants.  Millstadt is divided into:  Heimos Greenhouses which grows seasonal crops for Spring, Fall, and Christmas. Millstadt Young Plants is a rooting station for Sygenta Flowers, and Yoder Brothers.  Millstadt Gardens is the retail center.

In 1985, Norwin Heimos purchased the Millstadt property and began to expand and improve the existing greenhouses. Over the next 10 years several new ranges were constructed that covered 5 1/2 acres.

In June of 1996 ground was broken for the next expansion. Construction has continued since then with the addition of a Propagation Range in 2001. In 2005/06 14 quonset greenhouses were added to overwinter and increase perennial production. The complex now covers over 25 acres of greenhouse, office and production facilities, in addition to 10 acres of outdoor growing area.

In 2007 all outdoor growing areas had drains installed while being brought up to grade. Now all our excess water flows back to our retention pond so we can install systems to re-use this in the near future.

Our growers have set up a system for scouting the greenhouse for insects and fungus so they can treat small areas early instead of the whole greenhouse. This method allows us to conserve chemicals and target only the areas that may serve as more difficult then others.

Below are simply a few of the key factors that make N.G. Heimos Greenhouses one of the most efficient producers of horticultural goods today.

¨     All water used for irrigation or from rainfall is piped to a retention pond.

¨     Concrete floors are heated with hot water boilers; unit heaters serve as a backup.

¨     A Priva computer controls heat, light, ventilation and humidity for the entire greenhouse.

¨     50% Shade and Heat Retention Cloth in the greenhouses, a dual 37% / 50% system in the Propagation Range.

¨     Fan and Pad cooling in the Main Range and Propagation Range.

¨     Flood floors with underground storage tanks in the Main Range.

¨     Poly Roof vents, Open roof (MX) in Section AA.

¨     HID lights in all propagation areas.

¨     Irrigation systems include Drip Tube, Overhead mist and computerized water booms.

¨     Low and high temperature alarms with dial-out capability.

¨     Flier automated Transplanters, automated media system.

¨     Cooler for storage of cuttings and bulbs

¨     Generators that will run the entire complex during a power failure

In 2007 the company added an Agronomix Click-Clack line to stick vegetative cuttings.
